I’m Caroline Holzman - flower enthusiast, dreamer, and founder of Heliotrope Flower Farm, along with best friend and husband Karl.
Many people ask: Why the name Heliotrope?
It actually started with a song, “Heliotrope Bouquet” by Scott Joplin, one of my favorites that Karl would often play on the piano. I remember thinking, What even is a Heliotrope? Heliotrope is a delicate, vanilla-scented flower with deep purple blooms and an even deeper meaning: eternal love. It’s the kind of flower poets dream about—Emily Dickinson wrote of it often, and once I knew its name, I couldn’t forget it. To me, Heliotrope felt like the perfect symbol of what this farm stands for: love for the land, love for beauty, and a commitment to growing with intention and care.
As a second year farm, we are developing a place to share the joy and beauty of farming. We are looking forward to our peony, lavender, and veggie fields maturing. We also raise laying chickens and will be increasing the flock to offer more farm fresh eggs to the community.
Farming is in my roots. My grandfather worked the land in Wisconsin in the 1930’s and 40’s and my father grew up alongside him. When my dad bought a small piece of land in Illinois, he filled with every fruit and vegetable you could imagine. My brother and I were raised in those rows, especially the green beans. We pick every day only for my Mom’s promise of swimming after we finished.
I once swore that I’d never pick another green bean in my life, but found a vacancy in my life without dirt under my nails. Here I am now loving it more than I ever thought possible sharing this joy with my family alongside me.
Heliotrope Flower Farm is my way of honoring that legacy while building something new. We grow with care and intention and invite you to be a part of this beautiful journey. We hope that you feel the joy and purpose behind every petal.
